The splashing tar on signboards of shops which broke the boycott. The purpose of cutting the ears of the Japanese traitors.
Tarring required good techniques. Normally one did not tar the shops indiscriminately. Only the signboards were targeted. Those who were receiving a more severe warning was tarred thoroughly. Duck eggs were used. Tar was poured into them after the yoke and white were removed. These eggs were then thrown at the signs at the shop front. A cigarette tin would be used in the place of eggs for those requiring more severe warning. I suppose these could be called stink bombs.
