Air attacks were carried out on Japan by the Americans in early 1945. The Japanese resisted the best they could, but finally gave up when two atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The intensity of destruction and the potential threat of more to come were so great that the Japanese surrendered unconditionally. The local population turned out in droves to welcome the British back. The Japanese surrender document was signed on 12th September 1945 at City Hall. It was an emotional day for all who had lived through the Occupation as they were finally released from fear and suffering. The British were soon to realise that they had returned to an island where things would never be the way they were before the war... ^^^
