  1. Made regent in 1921, he succeeded his father, Taisho, as emperor in 1926. Hirohito helped persuade the Japanese government to accept unconditional surrender at the end of WORLD WAR II. In 1946 he renounced the idea of imperial divinity and was stripped of all but ceremonial powers by a new constitution. His son, AKIHITO, succeeded him.
