A nickname given to Singapore in the pre-WWII years and retrospectively synonymous with complacency. Painted and engendered the myth of an impregnable fortress Singapore. Hence the comparison with Gibraltar, the other great British fortress. This constant reverberation in the media and politicians' speeches about Singapore as the jewel in the British Far East Defence force proved to be fatal when the Japanese arrived in the Malayan peninsula. ^^^
