However, God ordered Noah, a righteous man, to build an ark to save himself and his family, together with two of every kind of living creature. The heavy rains lasted for 40 days and 40 nights. After a time, Noah sent out a raven and a dove to find land. Only the dove returned, but she had found nothing, because water still covered the Earth. Seven days later, the dove was released again, and returned with an olive leaf, evidence of dry land. Ever since, the dove has been seen as a messenger of God and a symbol of peace.
