There were no broad-leafed trees or soft-stemmed flowering plants. Instead of grasses, ferns, mosses, and horsetails grew on moister ground. Most of the trees and ground-cover plants were probably confined to strips of land near lakes and rivers. Away from these stretches of water, hot sunshine and months of drought had turned large tracts of countryside to desert.
