He was part of a team that had been set up by the American astronomer Percival Lowell (1855-1916) to search for a then unnamed planet thought to be responsible for irregularities in the orbital motions of the planets Uranus and Neptune. Tombaugh discovered Pluto using his own painstaking technique of comparing photographs of the same region of the sky taken several days apart.
