OCR: (1906- ) CLYDE WILLIAM TOMBAUGH is the American astronomer who discovered the planet Pluto in 1930. He was part of a team that had been set up by the American astronomer Percival Lowell (1855-1916) to search for a then unnamed planet thought to be responsible for irregularities in the orbital motions of the planets Uranus and Neptune. Tombaugh discovered Pluto using his own painstaking technique of comparing photographs of the same region of the sky taken several days apart. This meant that he was able to identify the dim and distant planet moving against a fixed background of stars. 1906 Born on February 4 in Streator, Illinois. 1929 Joins the staff of the Percival Lowell Observatory, Flagstaff, Arizona, as an assistant to learn more about astronomy.
