OCR: HARLOW SHAPLEY HARLOW SHAPLEY was an American astronomer who showed that the Milky Way Galaxy is larger than had been previously believed and that the Sun is toward its edge rather than at its center. Through his study of Cepheid variable stars (unstable, pulsating stars) he devised a way of measuring distances in space. This led to a review of the shape and structure of the Milky Way Galaxy, helping to establish our present understanding of the structure of the Universe. He also showed that spiral nebulas (now called spiral galaxies) are separate from our own galaxy. (1885-1972) A-Z SEE LIFE NEXT ALSO STORY
