OCR: (1835-1910) GIOVANNI VIRGINIO SCHIAPARELLI was an Italian astronomer who proposed that material from a disintegrating comet forms a meteor shower. He also observed Mars for many years, building up a complex picture of the planet. Schiaparelli used the Italian word canali (meaning "channels") in his description of surface details on Mars.
