He showed that the force that makes an apple fall from a tree to the ground is the same as that which keeps the Moon orbiting the Earth. His fundamental work, Philosophiae naturalis principia mathematica ("The Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy") established him as perhaps the most influential of all physical scientists.
