OCR: ISAAC NEWTON ISAAC NEWTON was an English physicist and mathematician whose understanding of gravity, along with his work on motion, on light, and his invention of the reflecting telescope had an enormous influence on practical and theoretical astronomy. He showed that the force that makes an apple fall from a tree to the ground is the same as that which keeps the Moon orbiting the Earth. His fundamental work, Philosophiae naturalis principia mathematica ("The Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy") established him as perhaps the most influential of all physical scientists.
