OCR: HENRIETTA LEAVITT HENRIETTA SWAN LEAVITT, an American astronomer, spent much of her career analyzing the magnitudes (degrees of brightness) of variable stars. She discovered that in certain cases (notably the Cepheid variables) there is a relationship between the magnitude and the period of light variation of a star (the brighter the star, the longer its period) This is now known as the period- luminosity relationship. Her work led directly to the first techniques for establishing distances between stars. Leavitt also discovered 2,400 variable stars and four novas. (1868-1921) A-Z SEL LIFE NEXT ALSO STORY
