OCR: (1855-1916) PERCIVAL LOWELL was an American astronomer who founded an observatory at Flagstaff, Arizona, in the hope of confirming the existence of intelligent life on Mars. His interest was stimulated by the work of the Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli (1835-1910) and the mistaken belief that there were canals on the Martian surface. His work popularized the theory of life on Mars. Lowell also predicted the existence of a ninth planet lying in the region beyond Neptune.
