His interest was stimulated by the work of the Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli (1835-1910) and the mistaken belief that there were canals on the Martian surface. His work popularized the theory of life on Mars. Lowell also predicted the existence of a ninth planet lying in the region beyond Neptune.
