OCR: GEORGES LEMAÎTRE GEORGES ÉDOUARD LEMAITRE was a Belgian astrophysicist who proposed that the Universe started in a huge explosion from a single point about 30 times the size of the Sun. This was the birth of the Big-Bang theory of the Universe (although it was not known by that title until 1950, when the English astronomer Fred Hoyle [1915- ] coined the term). Lemaître's ideas on the initial size of the Universe and the time of the explosion were wrong, but other scientists, notably George Gamow (1904-68), developed and improved upon Lemaître's work.
