(She had spent 6 months aboard the Mir space station.) Kondakova is the third Russian woman to be sent into space. Valentina Tereshkova (1937- ) was the first, in 1963, followed by Svetlana Savitskaya (1948- ) who made two trips, in 1982 and 1984.
