OCR: ANNIE JUMP CANNON ANNIE JUMP CANNON was an American astronomer who showed that stars can be classified by their spectra (frequencies of emitted light) into a sequence of star types. Her detailed work and classification system, are still used today by astronomers around the world. In her lifetime she classified more than 350,000 stars - more than anyone else had ever done. One of her particular stellar interests was variable stars (stars with a light output that varies regularly or irregularly), of which she discovered (1863-1941) 300. She also discovered five novas.
