His work on pendulum clocks enabled astronomers for the first time to plot stellar positions accurately as the Earth turned and the stars moved across the sky. His relatively high-precision telescopes enabled him to unravel details of Saturn's rings. Huygens was the first person to discover that Saturn has a separate ring system.
