OCR: CHRISTIAAN HUYGENS CHRISTIAAN HUYGENS was a Dutch scientist who developed two fundamental tools of the astronomer. His work on pendulum clocks enabled astronomers for the first time to plot stellar positions accurately as the Earth turned and the stars moved across the sky. His relatively high-precision telescopes enabled him to unravel details of Saturn's rings. Huygens was the first person to discover that Saturn has a separate ring system. Prior to his observations, it had been assumed that the rings were connected to the planet in some way. (1629-95) A-Z. SEL LIFE NEXT ALSO STORY
