OCR: EDWIN HUBBLE EDWIN POWELL HUBBLE was an American astronomer who revolutionized our ideas on the age and structure of the Universe. He studied nebulas (cloudy patches of light in the sky) and showed that many of these are in fact galaxies located vast distances away from our own Milky Way Galaxy. He then classified galaxies according to their shape (spiral or elliptical, for example). He also proved the expansion of the Universe based on a study of the light emitted by these galaxies. His work on galaxies remains the basis of our present system of classification. A-Z (1889-1953) SEE LIFE NEXT ALSO STORY
