OCR: 1915 Born on June 24 in Gilstead, Yorkshire, England. After studying at Bingley Grammar School he moves to Emmanuel College, Cambridge University, on a scholarship. 1938 Awarded the Smith's Prize for his outstanding examination results. 1939 Elected Fellow of St. John's College, Cambridge University. 1939-45 Works for the British Admiralty on the design of radar systems. 1945-56 Returns to work at Cambridge University, where he switches his attention from mathematics to astronomy and starts to examine the development of stars from clouds of gas and dust. He also studies the ways in which elements of higher and higher atomic mass are made by nuclear processes inside evolving stars. This leads him to suggest that matter is still being created and that the Universe is in a steady state. 1950 ...
