OCR: THE HERSCHEL FAMILY WILLIAM HERSCHEL was a German- born astronomer who discovered the planet Uranus using a home-made telescope of exceptional quality. His principal interest was the stars, and his work in this and related areas made him the most influential astronomer of his time. He was the first to show that binary, or double, stars orbit each other, and to propose that the Sun is moving through space. He also identified thousands of star clusters and nebulas, examined the shape and structure of the Milky Way Galaxy, and studied the evolution of the Universe.
