OCR: ROBERT GODDARD ROBERT HUTCHINGS GODDARD, an American physicist and rocket engineer, was the first person to successfully launch a liquid-fuel rocket. As a young man he became fascinated by the possibility of space travel and put his mind to the theory and practice of launching a rocket into space. The US space program grew out of his pioneering efforts, although his work was largely ignored until after his death. Goddard also achieved firsts in other areas of science and technology, holding 214 patents for new inventions that ranged from propellant feeds and combustion chambers to multistage rockets. NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, Maryland, is named for him. (1882-1945) A-Z. SEE LIFE NEXT ALSO STORY
