OCR: JOHN GLENN JOHN HERSCHEL GLENN was the first American astronaut to orbit the Earth. His successful flight occurred on February 20, 1962, and marked the beginning of a series of piloted achievements in space for the United States. A back-up pilot for the first two Mercury missions, he narrowly missed being the first American in space. His eventual flight, in the Mercury capsule Friendship 7, took him on three orbits of the Earth in less than 5 hours. This was Glenn's only spaceflight, but it was significant enough to guarantee him a place in the history books. (1921-) A-Z SEE LIFE NEXT ALSO STORY
