OCR: GEORGE GAMOW GEORGE GAMOW played a major role in the development of the Big-Bang theory, which suggests that the Universe originated in an unimaginably powerful explosion. He was an early supporter of the theory and put forward a model of the explosion showing how the helium gas in the Universe formed. He predicted that the Big Bang would leave behind background radiation. This was identified by Arno Penzias (1933- ) and Robert Wilson (1936- ) in 1965. Gamow was also interested in the evolution of stars, and, in particular, in the way that energy is produced in stars. (1904-68) A-7. SEE LIFE NEXT ALSO STORY
