OCR: GALILEO GALILEI GALILEO GALILEI was an Italian mathematician, astronomer, and physicist who was one of the first people to use the telescope to study the night sky. He made his own telescopes and systematically observed the sky, keeping a record of what he saw. He made significant discoveries, which were used in arguments to prove that the Sun, and not the Earth, was at the center of the Solar System. Galileo openly supported this theory, but spent the last years of his life under house arrest because his beliefs went against the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.
