OCR: NICOLAUS COPERNICUS NICOLAUS COPERNICUS was a Polish medical doctor and astronomer who changed our interpretation of the Earth's place in the Universe. He proposed, in his famous work De revolutionibus orbium coelestium ("On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres"), that the Earth rotated daily on its own axis and that it moved around the Sun in a year-long orbit, rather than the Universe rotating around the Earth. He also set out methods for calculating the size of the Solar System and the motions of the planets. It was more than a century, however, before his ideas were proved correct and accepted by science.
