OCR: (1930- ) MICHAEL COLLINS was one of three astronauts on the Apollo 11 mission that put the first human beings on a celestial object other than the Earth (the Moon) in July 1969. As the astronaut in charge of the command module Columbia, Collins stayed in lunar orbit as his colleagues, first Neil Armstrong (1930- ) and then Buzz Aldrin (1930- ), became the first people ever to walk on the Moon. A lunar crater in the Sea of Tranquillity, close to where Armstrong and Aldrin landed, is named for Collins. 1930 Born on October 31 in Rome, Italy. 1952 Graduates from the US Military Academy, West Point, New York.
