Her father, an architect, works briefly at Armagh Observatory, Northern Ireland. She has the opportunity of visiting the observatory and asking lots of questions. 1956 After completing her early schooling in Northern Ireland, she is sent to The Mount School, a Quaker boarding school for girls in York, England. 1961 She writes to English astronomer Bernard Lovell (1913- ) at Jodrell Bank radio observatory, Cheshire, England, for advice on becoming a radio astronomer.
