OCR: FRIEDRICH BESSEL FRIEDRICH BESSEL was a German astronomer who played a key role in the development of positional astronomy. This is the branch of astronomy concerned with determining the accurate positions of celestial objects. Bessel used the parallax method of observation to calculate the distance to the star 61 Cygni. In doing so, he became the first person to measure the distance to a star other than the Sun. He went on to measure the distances to over 50,000 stars. His methods laid the foundations for a more accurate scale of the Universe. A-Z SEE (1784-1846) LIFE NEXT ALSO STORY
