OCR: 1930 Born on August 5 in Wapakoneta, Ohio. He has his first airplane ride at age 6 and, as a teenager, has flying lessons. He gains his pilot's icense before he is legally old enough to drive a car. 1947 Enters Purdue University, Lafayette, Indiana, to study aeronautical engineering and becomes a naval air cadet. 1950 Flies 78 combat missions in Korea, is shot down once and is awarded the Air Medal 3 times. 1955 Joins NASA as a civilian high-speed test pilot. (He is one of 12 people who fly the X-15, a sophisticated research aircraft that can fly at hypersonic speeds and to high altitudes.
