OCR: NEIL ARMSTRONG NEIL ALDEN ARMSTRONG, the command pilot for Apollo 11, stepped onto the Moon's surface in July 1969 and became the first human being ever to walk on any celestial object other than the Earth. His Moonwalk, on which he famously said, "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind," was one of the most significant events in human history. He returned to Earth a world hero, and his name is still universally known today, almost three decades after the event. A lunar crater close to the landing site was named for Armstrong in honor of his achievement. (1930-) A-Z. SEE LIFE NEXT ALSO STORY
