On the Sunday evening of July 20, 1969, the control center at Houston, Texas, watched Apollo 11 astronaut Neil Armstrong (1930- ) step on to the Moon (the first person ever to do so), followed 19 minutes later by Buzz Aldrin. The two astronauts spent 22 hours on the Moon. Just over 21/2 hours of that time was spent walking on the lunar surface.
