OCR: STELLAR CLASSIFICATION STARS ARE classified according to their spectral characteristics. A star's Sirius B spectrum is obtained by separating its radiation into components that show the intensity of radiation of different wavelengths. This information is used to deduce the star's temperature, The Sun color, and chemical makeup. There are seven main spectral types, each known by a letter of the alphabet. Each type OBA FGKM has subclasses numbered from 0 to 9. SIRIUS B (TYPE A-5) This white dwarf has a surface temperature of 8,400 ℃ (15,200ºF) and a diameter one fiftieth that of the Sun. SAMPLE STAR SPECTRUM Each dark line indicates that radiation of a specific wavelength is being absorbed by a specific chemical element in the star. STAR STAR NAMING BRIGHTNESS COLORS STARS
