OCR: DARK NEBULAS A DARK NEBULA is a cloud of gas and Dark nebula dust, in which the dust absorbs light passing into the cloud from bright nebulas or star fields behind it. Dark nebulas, which are also known as absorption nebulas, do not radiate any visible light. They may, however, reradiate absorbed light in the form of radio waves or infrared energy. Dark nebulas can be a few thousand times more massive than the Sun. If a dark nebula is massive enough, at some point its material will condense to start forming stars. The dark nebula may then be heated by the hot young stars "S" OR SNAKE NEBULA and become a bright emission nebula. This S-shaped nebula, which lies in the Ophiuchus constellation, stands out against a background of bright nebulas.
