OCR: ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS used the Sun's journey across the zodiac as a way of marking the passage of time. Gradually, people became convinced that the regular motions of celestial objects could be used to predict the future, and all kinds of superstitions became associated with the zodiacal constellations. Astrology - the belief that the position of the stars and planets at the moment of birth determines the characteristics of a person's life - grew out of these superstitions.
