THE DISCOVERY of a solar system similar to our own was made in 1995 by the Swiss astronomers Michel Mayer and Didier Queloz. They observed a large planet, similar in nature to Jupiter, in orbit around a star called 51Peg, which lies between the stars Scheat and Markab in the constellation of Pegasus. Although this is not the first solar system outside our own to be discovered, it is the first that may be able to support life, at least in theory.
