OCR: FROM THE DAYS of German-bom astronomer Johannes Kepler (1571-1630), astronomers suspected that there might be another planet between Mars and Jupiter. The feeling was greatly strengthened by the publication in 1772 of the Titius-Bode Law (a formula for gauging the distances between planets according to their distance from the Sun) and the discovery of Uranus in 1781 exactly conforming to it. A systematic search for the planet was therefore begun in Germany, but the first asteroid to be discovered, Ceres, was found accidentally by an Italian astronomer on January 1, 1801. FURTHER EVIDENCE It was not long before three asteroids were discovered: Pallas in 1802; Juno in 1804; and Vesta in 1807.
