OCR: THE ASTEROID BELT THE ASTEROID BELT lies between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. Jupiter It stretches from around 1.7 to 4.0 astronomical units (AU) away from the Sun. There are billions of asteroids in the belt, usually with vast Asteroid belt tracts of empty space between them. Asteroids Mars may be carbonaceous, stony, or metallic. Scientists think the asteroids would probably have stuck together to form a planet had they not been prevented from doing so by Jupiter's powerful gravitational field. FAILED PLANET Asteroids are also known as minor planets. Each one follows an individual orbit around the Sun. SEL ASTEROID ASTEROID FACT NEXT ALSO COLLISIONS SIZES FILE
