OCR: GALAXY CLUSTERS MOST GALAXIES belong to a cluster or group of galaxies that is held together by gravitational attraction. Our galaxy belongs to a small, irregularly shaped cluster called the Local Group. Irregular clusters contain from a few up to several thousand galaxies of all types. A regular cluster is a roughly spherical group of at least 1,000 closely packed galaxies, most of which are elliptical. Even such closely packed galaxies are separated by distances of hundreds of thousands of light years. Neighboring clusters make up yet larger structures called superclusters. VIRGO CLUSTER This irregular cluster of at least 1,000 galaxies is 6 million light years across and 60 million light years distant. SEL THE LOCAL SUPERCLUSTERS FACT NEXT ALSO GROUP FILE
