The strength of the thrust depends on how much exhaust is produced and the rate at which it escapes. Thrust accelerates the rocket, increasing its speed. The acceleration depends also on the rocket's mass: the heavier a rocket, the more thrust it needs to reach space. The craft continues to accelerate as long as the rocket engines are firing and providing thrust.
