OCR: ROCKET POWER SPACE TECHNOLOGY SPACE ROCKETS WORK in the same way as fireworks; fuel is mixed with a material called an oxidizer, which contains oxygen, the gas necessary for combustion. This mixture, the propellant, burns to form hot gases, which expand, escaping through a nozzle and causing the rocket to move upward. This reaction was first described by the 17th- century English scientist Isaac Newton in his Third Law of Motion. He stated that for every action (the escaping gases) there is an equal and opposite reaction (the rocket's movement).
