The US Space Shuttle and the Russian space station Mir are packed with experiments for the astronauts to conduct during their time in orbit. Astronauts operate telescopes to observe space and cameras to photograph the Earth. They must also carry out maintenance on their spacecraft and perform everyday "housekeeping" chores.
