OCR: WALKING IN SPACE LIVING IN SPACE MANNED MANEUVERING UNIT A jetpowered backpack that attaches to a space suit, the Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU) has 24 small nozzles that shoot out nitrogen gas and allow the astronaut to move or turn in any direction. Joysticks on the arms control the astronaut's speed and direction. The MMU's nitrogen tank can be refilled in the Space Shuttle when it runs out. Wearing the backpack, astronauts can move freely outside the Shuttle to recapture a satellite for repair. PACK MAN RECORD A Shuttle astronaut takes a BREAKERS "walk", with a maneuvering unit strapped to his space suit. SEE ALSO SPACE TECHNOLOGY SPACE TRAVEL LIVING IN SPACE
