OCR: ASTRONAUT TRAINING LIVING IN SPACE MODERN TRAINING Astronauts are still required to be well educated in science, engineering, or medicine. Many pilots are selected from the armed forces, and among the crews are specialists trained to conduct experiments. The journey aboard the Space Shuttle does not subject them to the extremes of acceleration that earlier craft did, but they must still be fit. Brief JORTH tastes of weightlessness are provided in an aircraft called the "the vomit comet." UNDERWATER ASTRONAUT Astronauts train in tanks of water to simulate weightlessness. This provides TRAINING AN valuable experience for future ASTRONAUT extravehicular activities (EVAs). SEE ALSO SPACE TECHNOLOGY SPACE TRAVEL LIVING IN SPACE
