OCR: FACT FILE EACH ORBITER IS given a name. The ............................... first, Enterprise, was named after the spaceship in the TV series Star Trek. Built for testing purposes, Enterprise was never put into orbit, although it made a number of flights on top of a Boeing 747 jet. In 1977, it was released at an altitude of 22,000 ft (6,700 m), from where it glided safely back to Earth. There are four Orbiters in the present fleet: Columbia, Discovery, Atlantis, and Endeavour.
