The probes returned detailed pictures of the surface and measured levels of radiation and space dust. The first three looked for suitable Apollo landing sites along the Moon's equator. The last two Lunar Orbiter probes traveled in an orbit that took them The Moon over the poles of the Moon. MAPPING THE SURFACE The Lunar Orbiter images were used Orbital path as a reference to draw the first ACROSS THE MOON maps of the Moon. Together the Lunar Orbiter probes covered almost the whole of the Moon's surface.
