OCR: FIRST AMERICAN SPACE WALK THE ASTRONAUT ED WHITE became the first American to walk in space during the Gemini 4 mission, launched on June 3, 1965. White stayed outside the open hatch of his spacecraft for 21 minutes. During his time in space, White was linked to his capsule by an "umbilical cord," which provided him with oxygen to breathe. He maneuvered himself using a rocket gun filled with compressed gas. THE SADDEST MOMENT When told to return to the WHITE | Tether capsule Ed White said, "It's the TALKS saddest moment of my life."
