OCR: APOLLO 1 THE APOLLO PROGRAM began tragically. Apollo 1 .............................. should have been the first flight in the series; however, on January 27, 1967, an electrical spark started a fire as the astronauts, Virgil "Gus" Grissom, Edward White, and Roger Chaffee, tested systems in the craft's command module. The atmosphere in the capsule was pure oxygen, a gas that encourages burning. The fire spread so rapidly that the astronauts were unable to escape and all three men suffocated. After this disaster, the design of the Apollo spacecraft was modified to include an escape hatch, preventing any similar accidents.
