OCR: THE VANGUARD PROGRAM SET UP TO LAUNCH Radio the first US satellite, antenna for the Vanguard program was not transmission a success. The aim of the project was to build a rocket capable of launching a 9-kg (20-lb) satellite into Satellite orbit. The first two launch attempts were payload public failures, and by the time Vanguard 1 went into orbit on March 17, 1958, Explorer 1 had become the first US satellite and the USSR had already launched two Sputnik satellites. There were two more successful Satellite Vanguard launches, but eight of the 11 attempts failed, so the Second stage program was terminated.
