OCR: FROM MISSILES TO SPACE ROCKETS FOLLOWING WORLD WAR II, a race began between the USSR and the USA to build rockets capable of transporting nuclear weapons. These missiles were so powerful that they could be modified to carry a payload, such as a small satellite, into space and put it into Earth orbit. Among these were modified Jupiter C and Sapwood missiles, which launched Explorer 1 and Sputnik 1 respectively. READY FOR TAKEOFF A Jupiter C rocket on the launchpad at Cape Canaveral, March 1958.
