OCR: SOFT LANDING ................................... ........... A SOFT LANDING is a slow, controlled landing by a spacecraft onto the surface of a planetary object, using retro-rockets or parachutes to slow its rate of descent. For example, the lunar module on the Apollo 11 mission made a soft landing in the Sea of Tranquillity, and both the landers on the Viking space probe missions made a soft landing on the planet Mars.
