  13. Introduction
  14. ------------
  15. Thank you for purchasing this preview of STAR TREK: THE
  16. NEXT GENERATION "A Final Unity." The preview
  17. provides an overview of this exciting adventure with
  18. all your favorite characters from the TV series. You'll
  19. see cinematic animations, beam down to exotic worlds,
  20. and view an orientation of the ship and its systems
  21. (including Tactical for dealing with hostile
  22. encounters). Energize!
  23.  
  24. Installing the Preview
  25. ----------------------
  26. Before installing the preview, be sure you have the
  27. proper CD-ROM software and VESA drivers installed on
  28. your machine. Consult your CD-ROM and video card
  29. owner's manual for more information.
  30.  
  31. 1.      Insert the STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION
  32.     "A Final Unity" Preview CD-ROM into your CD-ROM
  33.     drive.
  34.  
  35. 2.      Type "D:" and <ENTER> at the DOS prompt. (If
  36.     your CD-ROM drive is a letter other than "D,"
  37.     type that letter instead.)
  38.  
  39. 3.      Type "INSTALL" and hit <ENTER> at the DOS
  40.     prompt.
  41.  
  42. 4.      After the installer loads, you have three
  43.     options: "View Preview Instructions," "Install
  44.     Preview" and "Exit Preview Installation."
  45.  
  46.     View Preview Instructions displays an on-screen
  47.     version of these instructions (with technical
  48.     information) and Exit Preview Installation
  49.     returns you to DOS.
  50.  
  51. 5.      Select "Install Preview." First, the installer
  52.     checks your computer's hardware and software to
  53.     see if they are capable of running the preview.
  54.     Items highlighted in yellow indicate that you
  55.     are able to install the preview, but may have
  56.     difficulty running it. If a category is
  57.     highlighted in red, you cannot install the
  58.     preview. Click on "Suggest Fix" for possible
  59.     solutions to the problem.
  60.  
  61. 6.      Select the drive letter where you want the
  62.     preview files installed. (The default is C:.)
  63.     Be sure that you have 6MB of hard drive space.
  64.  
  65. 7.      Type in a directory name for the preview. (The
  66.     default is \STPREVU.)
  67.  
  68. 8.      The install program then begins copying files
  69.     to your hard drive. Once this is done, you are
  70.     presented with sound card options.
  71.  
  72. 9.      Choose a sound card from the list or accept the
  73.     default. (The highlighted selection is the
  74.     install program's best guess at what sound card
  75.     you have in your machine.)
  76.     
  77.     If you are unsure what kind of sound card you
  78.     own, select "Auto Detect." The install program
  79.     will try to determine what kind of sound card
  80.     you own and automatically select your port 
  81.     address, IRQ and DMA.
  82.  
  83.     If "Auto Detect" does not detect your 100%
  84.     Sound Blaster compatible sound card, you will
  85.     need to manually select one of the options. 
  86.  
  87. 10.     If you choose a card from the list (rather than
  88.     selecting "Auto Detect"), the install program
  89.     asks you for your port address, IRQ and DMA.
  90.     These numbers can be found in your sound card's
  91.     manual.
  92.  
  93. 11.     Once the sound card is set up, the install
  94.     program proceeds to the video mode selection.
  95.  
  96. 12.     Choose a video mode from the list or accept
  97.     the default. (The highlighted selection is the
  98.     install program's best guess at what video mode
  99.     is appropriate for your machine.)
  100.  
  101.     If you're not sure which video mode to use,
  102.     select "Auto Detect." As with the sound card
  103.     selection, the "Auto Detect" option makes the
  104.     installer choose an appropriate video mode.
  105.  
  106.     Note: If the animations that take place in 
  107.     space don't display properly, you may be in the
  108.     wrong video mode. Run the setup program (by
  109.     typing "SETUP" and <ENTER>) and then change the
  110.     video mode to "VGA 320x200." This may solve
  111.     your problems.
  112.  
  113. 13.     Once the sound and video modes have been set
  114.     up, the Configuration Main Screen appears. If
  115.     you are unsatisfied with either your sound card
  116.     or video mode selection, select the
  117.     appropriate option from the menu to change it.
  118.     
  119.     If you make any changes on either the sound or
  120.     video options, you must select "Save
  121.     Configuration" from the Main Screen to retain
  122.     those changes.
  123.  
  124. 14.     To exit the configuration, select "Exit
  125.     Configuration."
  126.  
  127.     If, in the future, you need to adjust the sound
  128.     card or video mode, change to the STPREVU 
  129.     directory. Then type "SETUP" and <ENTER>. This
  130.     will run the setup program.
  131.  
  132. Loading the Preview
  133. -------------------
  134. Before running the preview, please first exit Windows,
  135. Navigator or any other DOS shells. You can run the
  136. preview in three different ways: as an interactive
  137. demonstration, as a movie player once, or as a movie
  138. player in a continuous loop.
  139.  
  140. 1.      Change to the directory on your hard drive
  141.     where you stored the preview files (usually
  142.     C:\STPREVU).
  143.  
  144. 2.      Next, type one of the following commands at the
  145.     DOS prompt to run the preview:
  146.  
  147.     "STPREVU DEMO"          (run as an interactive
  148.                 demonstration)
  149.     "STPREVU DEMOONCE"      (run as a movie player
  150.                 once)
  151.     "STPREVU DEMOCONT"      (run as a movie player
  152.                 in a continuous loop)
  153.  
  154. 3.      To bypass an animation sequence during this
  155.     preview, press <ESC>.
  156.  
  157.     To exit the continuous loop preview, press
  158.     <CTRL>-C or <CTRL>-<BREAK>.
  159.  
  160. Troubleshooting
  161. ---------------
  162. *       If you are having problems with divide overflow
  163.     errors, choppy sound or other crash problems,
  164.     there may be a compatibility problem with the
  165.     preview and EMM386. To temporarily disable
  166.     EMM386, edit your CONFIG.SYS file (with a text
  167.     editor) and locate a line that looks like the
  168.     following:
  169.  
  170.     DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE
  171.  
  172.     Add the word "REM" to the beginning of the
  173.     line. (Example: "REM DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE")
  174.     This will disable the memory manager. When you
  175.     are finished running the preview, simply remove
  176.     the word "REM" from your CONFIG.SYS.
  177.  
  178. *       If the preview gives you an error message 
  179.     saying that there is no VESA driver loaded 
  180.     and you have loaded your VESA driver, the
  181.     Stealth feature of QEMM may be the problem. To
  182.     temporarily disable QEMM, edit your CONFIG.SYS
  183.     file (with a text editor) and locate a line
  184.     that looks like the following:
  185.  
  186.     DEVICE=C:\QEMM\QEMM.SYS ST:M
  187.  
  188.     Add the word "REM" to the start of the line.
  189.     (Example: "REM DEVICE=C:\QEMM\QEMM.SYS ST:M")
  190.     This will disable the memory manager. When you
  191.     are finished running the preview, simply remove
  192.     the word "REM" from your CONFIG.SYS.

  204. Changing the STPREVU.INI File
  205. -----------------------------
  206. If you're having problems with sound or video, you can
  207. make manual adjustments to the STPREVU.INI file.
  208. Parameters for this file are set during installation
  209. or by the setup program. If you wish to adjust any
  210. variables for sound or video display, you can do so by
  211. editing this file with a text editor.
  212.  
  213. EXAMPLE:        DESCRIPTION:
  214.  
  215. Audio=SB8       Sound card selection.
  216.         Can be one of the following:
  217.  
  218.         NONE    (disables all sound card
  219.              parameters--no sound)
  220.         SB8     (Sound Blaster)
  221.         SBPRO   (Sound Blaster Pro)
  222.         SB16    (Sound Blaster 16)
  223.         PAS8    (Pro Audio Spectrum)
  224.         PAS16   (Pro Audio Spectrum 16)
  225.  
  226. Port=0x220      Sound card port address. Usually
  227.         defaults to 220h.
  228.  
  229. IRQ=7           Sound card IRQ. Defaults to 5 (for
  230.         Sound Blaster 16) and 7 (for Sound
  231.         Blaster).
  232.  
  233. DMA=1           Sound card DMA (Direct Memory Address)
  234.         channel. Defaults to 1 for most cards.
  235.  
  236. Video=HI8       Video mode (for some animations)
  237.         Can be one of the following:
  238.  
  239.         LO8     320x200 (256 colors)
  240.         HI8     640x480 (256 colors)
  241.         HI15    640x480 (32,000 colors)
  242.         HI16    640x480 (64,000 colors)
  243.  
  244. DPixel=OFF      Movie screen size.
  245.         Can be one of the following:
  246.  
  247.         ON      Shows movies at full screen
  248.             (double pixel mode).
  249.         OFF     Shows movies in a smaller mode.
  250.  
  251. Path=d:\demo    Path to the CD-ROM (which includes
  252.         most of the data to run the program).
  253.         This path can be changed to reflect
  254.         the data's new location if all the
  255.         CD-ROM files are copied to the hard
  256.         drive.
